North Shore

The North Shore of Oahu is famous for its surfing. With its massive winter waves, professional surfers flock to the North Shore both for play and to engage in international competitions held here in the winter months. It can be fun to watch the surfers catch huge waves. However, if you’re more interested in golfing as an activity, the North Shore is home to two world-class golf courses located at the Turtle Bay Resort, which also offers horseback riding. If you are looking to do some shopping, the North Shore is becoming more well known for its boutiques offering original watercolor paintings, handcrafted jewelry, fashions made in Hawaii, and all-natural soaps and lotions. Finally, if you are looking for adventure, you can skydive or take a glider ride at Dillingham Airfield.

Ke Nui Road in the North Shore is home to many of the top surfers in the world. Frequently, surf companies such as Billabong, Hurley, Oakley, and others purchase large homes in this area to house their professional surfers during the winter months for the surf competition season. Occasionally, these houses are rented out during the off-season to tourists. However, residents of the North Shore also include owner-occupants who moved to the North Shore to get away from the bustling downtown Honolulu but still be relatively near the major metropolis, that is within a 45 minute drive. Some owners also own property at the North Shore as a second, or vacation, home.

The North Shore tends to be somewhat less expensive than the rest of Oahu, but prices are on the rise, just not as quickly as some other areas. Inventory tends to be relatively high, and current time on market is 66 days from list date to contract date. So far in 2013, the median price for a single-family home on the North Shore is $650,000 and for a condo is $382,500. While it is probably best to live in the North Shore area if you are a professional surfer, the North Shore has plenty to offer as far as activities and atmosphere for its other residents as well.
